We are honoured to introduce Dr Riccardo Vinciguerra as a touchOPHTHALMOLOGY Future Leader 2025. Dr Vinciguerra is a medical consultant for Humanitas San Pio X, Milan, Italy. He is a distinguished ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, corneal transplants, corneal cross-linking, and refractive surgery. Dr. Vinciguerra earned his medical degree from the University of Milan and has extensive international experience, including fellowships in glaucoma and corneal transplant surgery at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in the UK.

In this Q&A session, Dr Vinciguerra reflects on the key highlights of his career, the mentors who have influenced his journey and his aspirations for the future.


 

1. Is there a specific patient, mentor, or experience that shaped your path in this field?

My father, my mentor in ophthalmology, has not only guided my hands but also shaped my vision, both as a physician and as a person.

2. What has been the most rewarding moment in your journey so far?

I have been fortunate to receive several awards from esteemed societies, but the most rewarding moment was winning the Troutman Prize in 2017 from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. It was my first major recognition and followed years of dedicated work developing an index to detect keratoconus using biomechanics. The experience was profoundly moving. Subsequently, the article introducing the Corvis Biomechanical Index became one of the most cited papers in the history of the Journal of Refractive Surgery.

3. What legacy do you hope to leave in the field of ophthalmology?

I hope to leave a legacy of meaningful contributions that improve patients’ lives and inspire and empower my colleagues through teaching and shared knowledge.
